What is Cupping Therapy?
Cupping therapy is an ancient form of Traditional Chinese and Asian medicine where the treating therapist creates local suction on the skin using glass or plastic cups.
Cupping is believed to mobilize a patient’s blood flow to promote the natural healing of the body. When combined with massage therapy, this ancient art is modernized to accommodate the advancements in today’s treatment techniques. This modality provides a unique approach to the fascia and body fluids. Cupping has an ability to affect deep tissues, clear fascial restrictions, and increase range of motion. The suction created will gently draw the skin upwards by creating a vacuum over the target area of the skin. During a fixed treatment, the cups are meant to stay in place for 3 to 15 minutes.
What Can Cupping Treat?
This technique can help aid in the release of deep scar tissues, muscle adhesions (“knots”), trigger points and reduction of swelling. Cupping therapy is believed to remove harmful substances and toxins from the treated tissue to promote healing. A treatment can also aid in reducing pain, inflammation and can promote mental and physical relaxation and overall well-being.
Cupping is regarded to be relatively safe, especially when performed by medically trained health professionals. Potential side effects are temporary and include:
- Mild local discomfort
- Mild bruising and red marks
- Skin irritation
Following a comprehensive assessment, our massage therapist can discuss whether Cupping will be helpful for you as part of your treatment plan. If you are already experienced with Cupping a Cupping appointment can be booked with our massage therapist.
